"Building and Bridging Communities of Learners"
This is the foundational philosophy upon which Teacher Education at Colorado State University - Pueblo is developed. It represents the collaborative and dynamic nature in which we prepare students to be the best teachers possible. With opportunities to pursue elementary education, secondary education or K-12 education, our students are engaged in very diverse and supportive learning environments that allow them to connect not only with their professors, but also with peers and current practicing educators.
We work closely with over 17 partnership school districts across southern Colorado as well as local community colleges, other faculty across our campus, and several community agencies to make our program an authentic place of teaching and learning. Students have multiple opportunities to network with practicing K-12 teachers in our partnership school districts where they spend over 800 hours working in actual classrooms, practicing and implementing what they are learning in their college courses.
Finally, our program has been the beneficiary of several federally- funded grants that continue to enhance our ability to equip our students with the latest technology and other educational resources in the exciting and ever-changing field of education.
Whether you are just beginning your college journey to becoming a teacher or you are considering transferring to our program from another institution, we are here to support those efforts in any way we can. Please explore the many helpful links from this page and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
The state of Colorado licenses teachers in a variety of areas. To prepare you for licensure, you will have a specific content major and a minor in education that correlates with the level you want to teach. The following areas of endorsement and their accompanying majors are available for Future Teachers at CSU-Pueblo:
  • Elementary Education (Grades K-6): Liberal Studies Major
  • Secondary Education (Grades 7-12): English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Political Science, or Spanish Majors
  • K-12 Education (Grades K-12): Music, Art, or Physical Education Majors
Practical experiences in K-12 schools are integrated into the professional education courses throughout the program. As students build experience in the field, they will have multiple opportunities to "try out" what is being learned in the college classroom. Students will design and teach lessons, work one-on-one or with small groups of students, collaboratively plan with cooperating teachers, integrate state-of-the-art technology into their teaching, and learn about the exciting, yet complex environments of K-12 schools. By the completion of the teacher education program, students will have spent 800+ hours in the field!
Our program uses a model of partnership schools where teacher education students are placed in classrooms that have experienced master teachers who are excited about helping to prepare future teachers. Our partnership schools also serve high-need student populations that allow future teachers to develop the necessary instructional skills to meet the needs of very diverse learners.
Students begin their journey immediately at the University with the opportunity to enroll in initial teacher education courses that incorporate practical experience in K-12 schools as early as their very first semester!
Planning & Advisement
Early and consistent communication with faculty advisors is essential to successfully completing a college degree. All teacher education programs are designed to be completed in 8 semesters, but there are very specific courses students must take, many of them in a designated order. It is important to contact the education department to obtain the necessary advisement forms and to be assigned an advisor as soon as students arrive on campus.
Admission to the Teacher Education Program
Admission into the program is separate from admission into the University. The teacher education admission process is completed during one of the early professional education courses called ED 301: Frameworks of Teaching, usually taken during the sophomore year. Requirements prior to admission include completion of 45 college credit hours and a minimum 2.6 cumulative GPA. After admission, students continue to take the remaining professional education courses along with their major courses.
Student Teaching
Students engage in this exciting and multi-faceted field experience during their final semester of the program. During the entire semester, students work along side a master teacher all day, every day in order to bring together all of their knowledge and skill as beginning teachers. Groups of student teachers and their cooperating teachers work together to form learning communities in partnership schools to best meet the needs of all the children. Requirements prior to student teaching include completion of all other required major and minor courses as well as passing the state licensure exam.
Technology Instruction and Resources: CSU-Pueblo is committed to preparing teachers to use technology effectively. All education classes model state-of-the-art applications of technology and provide technology resources for students to use and implement in their field experiences.
Curriculum Center: We maintain an incredible collection of PK-12 curricular materials for students to use when planning their lessons and instruction including teacher resource books, software, videotapes, and technology resources.
Teacher Education Association: This student organization provides multiple opportunities for future teachers to engage in professional development outside of the classroom, and to collaborate and network with other future teachers and current educators from the region.
State Licensure Exam Workshops: In order to become a licensed teacher, each student must pass a licensure exam in their content area. We offer many workshops each semester to help prepare students for success on the exam.
Placement Services: CSU-Pueblo hosts an Education Job Fair each April where students have the opportunity to interview with schools from across Colorado as well as districts outside the state.
Various CSU-Pueblo Student Support Services: The University has additional services available to students to support them throughout their college journey including academic services such as a Math Learning Center, Writing Lab, and special tutoring in various areas, as well as a Counseling Center, Student Health Center, Career Services and a child daycare center.
